The Townhall Square was created in the middle of the eighteenth century. Around a gracious fountain which was promoted to geographical centre of the town in 1789, the belfry the building of the townhall (1660) and the old corn exchange market (now a post office) form a baroque harmony : medals, volutes, friezes, wrought iron : the visitor sees everywhere the longevity of the baroque traditions during the reign of Louis XV. Do not miss the sculpted pediment of the ancient corn market (1718, J.P. Chastel) : the rivers RHône and Durance are represented as a couple of gods clasped in each other's arms.

Aix-en-Provence can neither be separated from its land nor from the Mount Sainte-Victoire, dear to the heart of Cézanne, the forerunner of impressionism with his art of light. The spirit of the painter lives everywhere, form the Jas de Bouffan to the Atelier des Lauves.

Aix is the neighbouring town of the modern economic capital of Southern France : the many-colored, lively and exotic MARSEILLE. It is also a unique cultural center, halfway between the medieval Avignon and the Riviera, next to the ski runs of the Alpes and the hills of the Luberon... Aix is a beautiful place to live in while learning French! For more information,
